On July 7, parents, friends and family gathered to honor the graduates of the Kahkewistahaw Community Cadet Corps.
The program is held at the Kahkewistahaw Education Complex from September to June and features Cadets aged eight to 18.
RCMP Constable and Drill Instructor Greg Dowd has been involved with the Cadets since December of 2007. He feels that there is no limit to what young people can learn from the program.
“They learn everything: teamwork, leadership, respect for others, confidence, speaking ability.
“Discipline is one of the big things. Everything from keeping their uniforms tidy, showing up on time - kind of a life skills thing.”

Wicihitowin Foundation

The Wicihitowin Foundation was established in 1995, 50 years after the end of World War II. Its’ purpose is to serve as a living legacy to First Nations' veterans who served Canada honourably in both World Wars and international conflicts, including peacekeeping missions. First Nations' veterans served with distinction, defending their beliefs on behalf of the country, their communities, and their families.

Wicihitowin honours these veterans by nurturing Aboriginal youth, preparing them to rise to the challenge of responsibility and leadership and preparing them to excel physically and spiritually as tomorrow's leaders - "strong, brave and true". The foundation’s name reflects its’ mission: “Wicihitowin” is the Cree word for "helping each other".

Also in 1995, the Regina Police Service and the RCMP held a National Aboriginal Youth Conference at “Depot” Division. This national conference was very successful with youth attendee and role model participation from every Province and Territory. Upon completion of the conference a funding surplus was realized. It was decided that this surplus should be dedicated to Aboriginal youth development. A partnership was formed with the two police services and Wicihitowin.
The resulting Wicihitowin Justice Scholarship Awards emerged as the legacy. Each year Aboriginal youth that are engaged in education related to Justice have an opportunity to compete for a scholarship.
Scholarship recipients are selected using several criteria.
- Community Service
- Demonstrated interest in justice and policing
- Academic performance
- References and letters of recommendation
- Proof of enrollment in a program of post-secondary education and training in a justice field
- Recognized Aboriginal status

This year, we are pleased to announce that Wicihitowin Foundation is offering to provide support to Saskatchewan's Community Cadet Program.
They propose that Cadets will actively engage in their own fundraising and they in turn are offering to provide donations in relation to the activity and the fundraising efforts.
